Hand Rejuvenation describes cosmetic treatments to diminish the signs of aging hands.

Background
Just as a person's age may be judged by their facial appearance, the appearance of the hands may betray one's age.

A 2006 study published in the journal Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery found that most people can accurately tell a person's age by viewing only their hands.

In the study, people examined unaltered photographs of female hands and were asked to estimate the women's ages, i.e., younger than 20 years, 20 to 30 years, 30 to 40 years, etc. In the majority of cases, participants were able to accurately estimate the age of each woman in the unaltered photographs.

The Aging Process

Signs of Aging Hands:

• Age spots: The hands are constantly exposed to the elements, so even those who are meticulous about slathering sunscreen will eventually see the hallmarks of aging skin: discoloration and sunspots.
• Translucent skin: All skin thins with age but the hands have very little fat. Without plump tissue underneath, this skin tends to look paper thin more quickly. The skin on the hands is actually thinner than that on the face.
• Wrinkled skin: Wrinkles are an obvious sign of aging. The skin on the hands needs more moisture than the rest of the body because they are washed frequently, contributing to drying and wrinkling.
• Deflated appearance: Without a lot of sturdy tissue for support, thinning of the skin begins to settle in, giving hands a sunken, hollow look.
• Prominent tendons and bones: As the hands age and lose volume, the tendons and bones become more noticeable.
• Prominent veins: As the hands age and lose volume, the large veins on the backs of the hands become much more visible

Hand Rejuvenation

Skin Resurfacing Procedures:

Resurfacing procedures such as laser treatments and chemical peels may be applied to the hands to diminish wrinkles and/or age-related discoloration and uneven tone.

Volume Restoration:

Injectable Fillers may be applied to the hands to restore volume and thereby diminish the appearance of deflation and/or prominence of tendons and veins.
